Mattia Capezzani - perfect imperfections
"The beauty of imperfection is the message that lies in any of my products. In the last phase of my creations, I ruin them. I usually put them in a cask with stones, which symbolizes shaping the imperfection from something originally perfect. Because each of us falls in love with the imperfections of something or someone, and those imperfections are what make them or even us unique" – designer Mattia Capezzani. Distinctive design, aged leather, and the "Made in Italy" quality seem to be encoded in the designer DNA. Tell us, how does your day begin?
I would say that my day never ends. Indeed, in the morning, I usually take care of projects for new pairs; in the afternoon, I look for materials. And at night, I often dream about shoes when I go to sleep. So I would say that my job is a continuous work in progress.
What are your first memories of shoes?
One of the memories from my childhood that is related somehow to shoes is when I was little, and I used to play at hide-and-seek, and my favorite place to hide was the shelf with all different types of leather.

Did you have a favorite pair as a child?
The picture in my mind of my favorite pair of shoes goes back to when I was little, and since I grew up in the countryside with my grandparents, I often spent time with them in the fields. My grandpa's boots, usually dirty with soil, always fascinated me. (Probably because it reminded me of hard work and family traditions.
Tell us about your design philosophy. Where do you get your design inspiration?
My collections express the exact formula that combines childhood memories and personal growth. Before any inspiration, there is research: my creations are intimate and timeless, and they represent the culture and history of my territory, Marche.
What does it mean "Made in Italy" for you today?
Today more than ever, I believe that Made in Italy is a genuine signature. The Made in Italy symbolizes quality and excellence. So, in my opinion, it will be something that people would look for more in the next few years. For too long, we have already seen how there is a high consumption in the clothing market of things that we wear three times, and then we throw them away because of their bad quality. And this is clearly at the expense of our planet.
Describe your brand in one sentence.
The beauty of imperfection. Intelligent is sexy?
The beauty of imperfection is the message that lies in any of my products. In the last phase of my creations, I "ruin" them. I usually put them in a cask with stones, which symbolizes shaping the imperfection from something "originally perfect" because each of us falls in love with the imperfections of something or someone.
